God Made Light

This is the first lesson I did for our "Babies" class. They range in age from barely sitting to almost 2 years old. Seems like a large age difference, but at our congregation there are not too many at a time.

I try to keep the Welcome Time the same as much as possible. The children tend to do better with a routine. I love to sing and the music helps get the kids involved as well, so we do lots of singing in our Welcome Time.

I begin with "This is the way..." song. I do several verses and use lots of props. Verse 1: wash our face (using scrap material). Verse 2: Comb our hair (using combs). Verse 3: Drive to church (using little people cars). Verse 4: Sing to God (say La-La). Verse 5: Sit so still. Verse 6: Pray to God. This leads us straight into a prayer.

Next is "God Made the Big Round Sun". We use laminated suns, trees, and birds to go along with this song. I had access to a CD that included "I Am Happy at Church". I sing this song right before "Jesus, Loves Me".

We then use a large mirror to welcome each child by name to class. Everyone gets a turn at seeing themselves in the mirror. To begin our Bible lesson we sing "Oh, I Love to Pat the Bible" at least 2 times (sometimes more!). I then encourage the children to search the Bible to find Jesus. I have placed laminated stickers of Jesus inside the baby Bibles for each child to find. They really love finding Jesus in there and pointing Him out to us.

Now we begin our lesson. This lesson is about the first day of creation. I have a large felt board that will be used throughout this series. Each lesson allows us to add to the creation of the world. This gives the children the visual of all the items we talk about. On the first day God made light, therefore we use a flashlight to show them the light on the table top. We also use black and white foam pieces to show the differences.  Really anything that they can put their hands on but not in their mouths would work.  This lesson can be adjusted for 2-3 year olds as well. You could start a number line and discuss the number 1 along with the colors black and white.  I also used flash cards to show the lesson to the children.

After the lesson we sing some creation songs on the included CD and then have snack and play time until class time is over.

I will try to add pictures of the various items as we go along with the lessons.

Let's Get Started

Hi there,

I am in the process of recording what I actually teach at the various age levels in order to have a way to document everything.  Due to my busy life this seems to be the easiest way for me to update this information and make it searchable!

I will be attempting to update this website with pictures, ideas, and updates on what I am doing in Bible class or a regular basis.  I would love to hear from you. If you like an idea let me know. If you don't like an idea I am opened to hearing that too. Remember, my goal is to help children learn the Bible.
